Before a packet is sent

  • Look up the MAC for the IP in the ARP table
    • MAC found - encapsulate
    • No MAC - broadcast
      • Same subnet - OK
      • Different subnet - look up the router MAC in the ARP table
        • Found - OK
        • Not found - broadcast
